October 11th marks the International Day of The Girl, an annual day set aside to honor and recognize some of the most vulnerable populations around the globe: women and girls. The practice began almost three decades ago and is recognized as a core initiative by the United Nations. On International Day of The Girl, the hope is that everyone will continue to support and uplift the efforts of thousands of organizations and advocacy groups who aim to provide clean water, food, education, medical services, access to healthcare and safety for women and girls.
Each year, the day is marked with celebrations around the world. This year, the theme is, “GirlForce: Unscripted and unstoppable.
As we stop to honor this important day each year, we wanted to take a look at some of the iconic Black girl characters who inspired us and made us see ourselves in their stories. One thing that ties us together no matter, race, creed or sexual orientation is cinema.
As we know Black actors have not had easy access in Hollywood, especially Black women actors. However the below actresses were able to bring Black girlhood to the front and center, a sacred experience that represents a period of life which sets the trajectory for the rest of their lives. Some of the depictions of Black girlhood are easygoing and carefree, while others are literally heartbreaking. These characters show the range of our humanity, our innocence, spanning to the loss of it.
While some of the below actors and shows have seen their legacies tarnished due to recent controversies, their roles still remain entrenched in the cannon of #BlackGirlMagic.
