Even though Jeannie Mai and her mom seemingly have a close relationship now, the talk show host revealed that her mom was married for eight years and only told Mai about the nuptials recently. The 40-year-old was alarmed to find out the man she thought was her “Uncle” was really her stepfather.
“My mom got married without telling us kids for years,” Mai said on a recent episode of The Real. “‘Uncle Ted’ has been my stepfather for 15 years. Eight years married, eight years married, sorry. But I found out just a year and a half ago.”
Mai, who hosts a popular YouTube show called “Hello Hunnay,” broke the news to her fans back in August.
“At family parties, or at like, you know, holidays, I would meet Uncle Ted, but Mamma Mai would bring him along with other friends, male and female, and say, ‘this is Uncle Ted.’ So I took it like, he’s a family friend,” Jeannie said. “Like every Chinese New Year, Uncle Ted was there, he gave us money,” Mai said of the relationship.
It wasn’t until one random night when Olivia and Uncle Ted were visiting her home in Los Angeles that she realized the two had something deeper going on. “The Real” star caught Ted sneaking into her mom’s room one night.
Jeannie had both Ted and Olivia appear on the YouTube channel to ask them questions about their love life. The duo revealed they met online in a chat room for Vietnamese singles.
“How did you guys fall for each other?” Jeannie asked the pair.
“Well, you know, we talked probably, three or four months before we ever met,” Ted said, “It lasted until like, two or three o’clock in the morning on the weekend.”
“He introduced me to his family, to his mother, that’s why he respects me, that’s why I like him so much, okay?” Olivia said. “That’s a good thing about him.”
Olivia said she kept the information from her kids because she didn’t want them to be hurt by the decision.
“The reason I would say, because you keep trying to make your father and me go back all the time,” Olivia explained. “I have three kids, and all of them love their father so much, so I don’t want to hurt your feelings.”
