Jermaine Dupri caught a lot of backlash after deeming today’s popular female rappers as stripper rappers. After a few people got in his ear, the SoSoDef CEO decided to take matters into his own hands and mold the next female emcee.

“After all the calls, DMs, angry tweets and other messages saying ‘I am a major gatekeeper in the hip hop world, why don’t I invest in a female who is out here hustling and making a name for herself?’” he wrote on Instagram. “I decided to create the #SoSoDefFemalecypher. Details coming soon.”

Dupri caught major side eye when he said this new class of female rappers, like Megan Thee Stallion, City Girls and Cardi B, all sound alike because of their sexy and unapologetic style of rapping.

“I feel they’re all rapping about the same thing,” Dupri said during an interview with PEOPLE. “I don’t think they’re showing us who’s the best rapper. For me, it’s like strippers rapping. […] OK, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club, you got a story about you dancing in the club.”

His response was hypocritical and shows the double standard in hip-hop is still alive because EVERY POPULAR MALE RAPPER has rapped about their sexual preference, endowment and bedroom romps.  But when women do it they are said to not have the same level of lyrical skill as their male counterparts. Female spitters like Kash Doll, Lizzo, Rapsody, Tierra Whack, Tink and Dreezy all have their own distinctive style, so his comments were not only disrespectful but tone deaf. Male rappers all rap about drugs, money and sex and they are automatically inserted into a top five. But I digress.

Cardi B responded saying that her explicit raps resonated more with her fans.

“When I did ‘Be Careful‘ people was talking mad s— in the beginning like ‘What the f— is this?’ ‘This is not what I was expecting,’” she said in an Instagram video.

Whether it was a reaction to the backlash or not, his new project will give female rappers another platform,  which is what they deserve.
