When news broke that Aretha Franklin passed last Thursday, the first thing at the top of everyone’s mind — other than mourning the loss of the Queen of Soul — was who will they get to do her tribute. The pressure is on for the MTV VMAs which air tonight and will be the first major award show to pay homage to Ms. Franklin. But over the weekend, Black Music Honors held their own musical tribute for the queen.

The 3rd annual award show, which was taped in Nashville, TN, was hosted by Rickey Smiley and LeToya Luckett at Nashville’s Tennessee Performing Arts Center the night of Franklin’s passing. During the ceremony, Syleena Johnson, Paris Bennett, and Angela Winbush sang Franklin’s iconic 1967 single “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and we have to say they did the soul singer proud.

The full two-hour television special taping won’t broadcast in national syndication until September 8-30 — airing on Bounce TV September 28 — but check out the clip of Syleena, Paris, and Angela’s tribute in the video below and tell us what you think. Would Aretha Franklin approve?
