Letting go of a relationship is never easy. Even if deep down, you know it’s time to move on, the pain of ending things and the reality of starting over kicks in. Staying in a relationship that’s comfortable is often much easier than breaking things off and going it alone. But regardless of how difficult it might be to start over, if the signs are there telling you that it’s time to move on, it’s best to listen.
Here are seven signs it’s time to let go of your relationship:
1. Your Partner Breaks Your Trust
Trust is the foundation of a happy and healthy relationship. Without it, the relationship won’t last. If your partner is constantly breaking your trust, it’s time to move on. Each and every time they lie to you or betray you, a little bit of that foundation gets destroyed. After a while, there’s nothing left to stand on. Find someone who respects you enough to be open and honest with you. Someone who has no interest in lying to you, hurting you or betraying your trust.
2. You Change Who You Are For Your Partner
If you become a different person around your partner, your friends or family members might be the first to see it. You should never feel the need to change who you are to make someone else love you. If your partner doesn’t accept you for who you are, it’s a clear sign that you need to end the relationship. Take some time alone to work on being comfortable with who you are. Make sure that in your next relationship, you feel completely free to be yourself.
3. Your Partner Is Overly Needy
In a healthy relationship, both people are able to depend on one another equally. If your partner is extremely needy and unable to do things on their own, their behavior can end up creating problems in your relationship. You’ll eventually feel drained because all of your time and energy is spent on your partner. If your relationship starts to feel one-sided, it might be time to reconsider how the situation escalated the way it did, and whether or not you’re happy.
4. Your Partner Brings You Down
The person you’re with should make you feel good about yourself. They should motivate you to do your best, support you in all of your endeavors and cheer you on when you succeed. If you feel sad or upset after spending time with your partner, it’s a clear sign that you need to end things. If your relationship is bringing negativity into your life, it’s time to move on.
5. You Aren’t A Priority
Juggling all of your responsibilities can be difficult. But the truth is, people make time for who or what they want to make time for. If it seems like your partner is constantly cancelling dates, telling you they’re too busy to see you and cutting phone calls short, you clearly aren’t a priority to them. Break it off and find someone who actually wants to spend time with you.
6. You’re Not Able To Depend On Your Partner
While being overly dependent can be a problem, you should be able to depend on your partner when you need them. Whether you need a shoulder to cry on, an ear to listen or a date to your friend’s wedding, your partner should always show up. If you’re constantly getting stood up or blown off by your other half, it’s time to move on.
7. Your Partner Doesn’t Listen To You
A friend, family member or romantic partner who values your relationship will take the time to listen. If your partner can’t get through a conversation without checking their phone, redirecting the conversation back to themselves or completely disregarding your feelings, it’s a sign that they don’t truly care. If your partner doesn’t care enough to listen to you, it’s time to let go of the relationship.
