On this season of “Love Hip-Hop: Hollywood (LHHH),” audiences got to know Daniel “Booby” Gibson outside of his prior relationship with and marriage to Keyshia Cole. And now that the cameras have stopped rolling on the VH1 reality show, the former NBA star is still revealing other parts of himself, like how he battled severe depression.
That revelation came about during an interview with the Jasmine Brand in which the 31-year-old explained that he has a passion for mental health issues.
“My whole thing is being an advocate for people who have battled depression,” he shared. “I went through a serious depression when I stopped playing basketball, I contemplated suicide, so I like to be a voice for people who might be dealing with those types of things.”
Booby played in the NBA for six seasons as a Cleveland Cavalier after being drafted in 2006. In 2008, he signed a five-year $21 million contract with the team but in 2015 he announced he was retiring to focus on his rap career.
Earlier this year, Booby shared it wasn’t just the end of his career on the court that led to his depression. He’d also gotten a divorce after separating from Keyshia in 2014, lost his grandmother, and suffered an injury that required him to have surgery on his ankle.
“I was just hit with a flurry of events,” he told USA Today. “Mentally, it just took away my ability to work out. I was suffering from depression and anxiety. Honestly, basketball was my sanctuary, but I couldn’t even do that. I really got to the point where being alive wasn’t something that I wanted anymore.”
Working on his music ended up flipping the switch for Booby and giving him a new lease on life. He’s also looking for a new lady.
“I need a woman who is very ambitious, a woman with something going on, that’s sexy to me, I don’t have a type, I like something nice to look at, it’s really like a connection thing for me, some reason I like a girl with a little attitude.”
