Kerri Kasem reveals why she protested against her stepmother on Autopsy: The Last Hours of Casey Kasem‘s Saturday, December 10, special, as seen in an Us Weekly exclusive sneak peek.
Kerri’s father is the late Casey Kasem, best known for hosting American Top 40, who died in June 2014 at age 82 after suffering from Lewy body dementia. In the last years of his life, his wife, Jean Kasem, was embroiled in a legal battle with the radio personality’s three children from his first marriage, with his offspring claiming that Jean prevented them from seeing their father. (Casey and Jean tied the knot in 1980.)
After three months of not seeing her ailing father, Kerri decided to organize Casey’s loved ones in front of his home in October 2013 to shed light on the fact that Jean allegedly wouldn’t let any of them have contact with the star.
“[I decided,] ‘I got to protest,'” Kerri, 44, tells the camera in the preview clip. “‘I got to let people know what she’s doing.’ And it was just going to be me with a sign outside of his house saying, ‘Jean, why won’t you let me see my dad?’ But then I thought, ‘Wait, she’s not letting anybody see Dad.'”
“These are all people that have known my father for 30, 40, 50, 60 years,” she explains of the others who allegedly weren’t getting a chance to see Casey.
In response to the protest, Jean’s lawyers draw up visitation paperwork that would allow Kerri and her two siblings to have a 60-minute visit every other Sunday. Unfortunately, Kerri claims Jean didn’t stay true to that arrangement: “When my sister and brother signed the agreement to see my dad, how often did we see him? Zero.”
