Sometimes, evil cloaks itself in righteous costumes to disguise its abuses, and nothing could be truer for the recent arrest of a Catholic nun charged with aiding priests in raping deaf children.

Kosaka Kumiko, 42, was seen being escorted in handcuffs—still draped in her habit—by Argentinian police.

“I am innocent,” she proclaimed to judicial officials, though this is contradicted by the testimonies of multiple deaf children from the Antonio Provolo Institute where she served.

The institute, which essentially functioned as a school, mainly “served” deaf children.

“They always said it was a game,” said one of the abused women, “‘Let’s go play, let’s go play’ and they would take us to the girls’ bathroom.”

Among the atrocities that Kosaka oversaw and helped enable were forced anal/vaginal sex, groping, and oral sex.

Investigators became suspicious of her involvement after one student claimed that Kosaka forced her to wear a diaper to cover up a hemorrhage she’d developed after being raped by Horacio Corbacho, a head priest.

Adding a disturbing irony, some children alleged they were raped repeatedly near a portrait of the Virgin Mary.

Thankfully, the priests accused of the actual rapes were arrested last year—Horacio Corbacho and Nicola Corradi.

The Antonio Provolo Institute has a separate branch in Italy, and that is where Corradi was accused of his own atrocities—yet never received sanctions from the Vatican.

Issues of sexual abuse towards children within the Catholic Church are nothing new.

Earlier this year, we reported Pope Francis’ controversial move to lighten penalties for convicted child molesters within the Catholic Church.

Now, after sparking widespread backlash from the public, a leading member of the Church’s commission to fight pedophilia has resigned.

“The lack of cooperation,” said Marie Collins of the Church’s Pontifical Commission for the Protection of Minors, “particularly by the dicastery most closely involved in dealing with cases of abuse, has been shameful.”

Although she initially viewed the Pope as having a “genuine wish” to end sexual abuse within, Marie said things have taken a turn for the worst, thus prompting her resignation.

“It is devastating in 2017”, said Marie, “to see that these men still can put other concerns before the safety of children and vulnerable adults.”
