Idris Elba Set For Fast And Furious Spinoff Role

Just when you thought the cast of the the Fast and Furious franchise couldn’t get any bigger, the spin-off film goes and signs another big Hollywood actor. Idris Elba is in the final negotiations to play the main villain in Hobbs and Shaw.

A lot of controversy surrounded the announcement that Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham would be getting a spin-off from the Fast and Furious franchise. Both fans and cast members alike spoke against it, and yet the process of making it happen continues to move forward. Deadpool 2 director David Leitch was hired on to direct, after both Johnson and Statham signed on to reprise their roles of  special agent Luke Hobbs and criminal mastermind Deckard Shaw respectively. It’s also been announced that the script has been finalized and that production would start this fall. What was missing though was the villain. Sources say however Elba will play the role, and create an interesting antagonist for the heroic duo.

It was never a surprise that Johnson would be given a spin-off series of his own. After all, ever since appearing in the fifth movie, Johnson has been one of the favourite characters of the series. Not only is his character popular, but Johnson himself is a huge draw at the box office. Statham has been a relative newcomer to the series, only having appeared in the last two. Originally a villain, he helped the heroes out in the eight film.

Elba will add a new element to the franchise, and he is accustomed to playing a strong villain. He was the bad guy in Star Trek Beyond, and also voiced Shere Khan in Jon Favreau’s The Jungle Book. He’s been in a fair number of movies in the last couple of years, including The Dark Tower, Molly’s Game, Thor: Ragnarok, The Mountain Between Us, and even had a small role in this year’s Avengers: Infinity War.
