If you thought Issa Rae’s hit HBO series and recent Golden Globe nomination meant that she was going to stop creating new and original content, you thought wrong. In fact, she and “Empire” star Jussie Smollett have partnered together to help produce content from other Black storytellers.
Actor, writer and filmmaker James Bland, wrote, directs and stars in a new YouTube series called Giants. The show is about three characters dealing with the giants in their lives. “Three millennials determined to live life on their own terms, no matter the cost, quickly learn that when life starts to kick your ass, you either lie down, or fight back.”
In addition to Bland, the show also stars William Catlett and Vanessa Baden, who you may recognize from “My Brother and Me.”
In the trailer, we watch as the three characters struggle in various ways. Journee is suffering from manic depression so strong that she is often unable to go to work in the morning. Malachi is struggling pay rent and turns to prostitution. And Ade is dealing with ostracization from his father who is disappointed that he decided to pursue a career in dance rather than engineering.

Giants premieres on Wednesday, January 25 on Issa Rae’s YouTube channel and will include six 20 minute episodes.
