Actress Ellen Pompeo just gave white allies a perfect example on how to use their mouth to speak truth to power.
The Grey’s Anatomy star is featured on the latest cover of Porter Magazine’s third annual Women In Television issue alongside Gina Rodriguez, Gabrielle Union, and Emma Roberts. Porter Magazine is an extension of the shopping website Net-A-Porter.
During a roundtable discussion with her fellow cover co-stars, Pompeo succinctly addressed the magazine’s lack of inclusivity on set when the conversation turned to diversity and awareness in Hollywood.
“This day has been incredible, and there’s a ton of women in the room. But I don’t see enough color,” Pompeo said. “I didn’t see enough color when I walked in the room today.” It starts at the 16:27 mark.
But that wasn’t the end all. Pompeo took it a needed step further to address the silence that sometimes surrounds white allies who want to speak out but never find the bearing to do so.
“I had a meeting with a director of another endorsement project that I’m doing where I said, ‘You know, when I show up on set, I would like to see the crew look like the world that I walk around in everyday,’” she continued. “And I think it’s up to all productions to make sure that your crew looks like the world we see. As Caucasian people, it’s our job. It’s our task. It’s our responsibility to make sure we speak up in every single room we walk into, that this is not ok and that we can all do better. It’s our job because we’ve created the problem.”
While the other actresses look somewhat stunned at Pompeop’s take, Union’s face gives a much needed “Welllll!” church vibe. The whole discussion was littered with honest and real moments about the struggles women of color face in Hollywood and in their personal lives.
While it isn’t the first time the actress has spoken out about the topic. Pompeo has been in an interracial marriage for over 10 years to her husband Chris Ivery, who she shares three children with. She’s been dinged before on social media for her responses and affiliating a little too comfortably with the culture, but this time social media definitely had her back.
Let’s hope that more white people all around the globe will start to awaken to what Pompeo is saying and not sit comfortably in their silence, but also take the time to speak out.
