La La Land Leads Critics’ Choice Movie Nominations
Let the awards season begin. The Critics Choice nominations were announced today, and not surprising La La Land led the way. The film isn’t even set to hit theatres until December 16th, but the buzz about the film continues to grow thanks to strong showings at festivals around the world, including TIFF 2016.
Damien Chapelle’s musical La La Land received 12 nominations, including best picture, best director, best actor for Ryan Gosling and best actress for Emma Stone. If the film does as well when it launches on December 16th, it might just sweep all the major awards up to and including the Oscars.
Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival and Barry Jenkin’s Moonlight found themselves in second place in nomination, tied with 10 apiece. Like La La Land, both received best picture nominations, and will compete against Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Lion, Loving, Manchester by the Sea and Sully.
Over all the Critics Choice Awards recognizes films in 27 categories, including best picture, best director, best actor and actress, best supporting actor and actress, best young actor/actress, best adapted screenplay, best costume design, best hair and makeup, best score and best song. It also recognizes genre movies such as comedies, action movies, sci-fi/horror movies as well as best actors and actresses in them.
