Margot Robbie Led Birds Of Prey Gets A February 2020 Release Date

Up until now, February 7, 2020 was booked by Warner Bros as an “Untitled Warner Bros. event film”, but now it’s clear what the untitled film is. Yesterday it was announced that the DC Comics superhero film Birds of Prey will be filling the slot, which means the production of the film is more than likely set to begin sometime soon.

Birds of Prey will star Margot Robbie, who will once again play Harley Quinn, a role she played in 2016’s Suicide Squad. The movie will feature a team of DC Comics female superheroes, including Black Canary, Huntress, Renee Montoya and Cassandra Cain. Black Mask was previously announced to be the main villain for the movies, and Cathy Yan was announced as the director. The plot hasn’t been announced, but a brief synopsis was given that states the movies “follows the adventures of a revolving group of female heroes and villains and is based on the DC Comics characters and concepts created by Jordan B. Gorfinkel and Chuck Dixon.”

While no other roles other than Margot Robbie’s has been cast, several actresses have been testing for leads. Among them are Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Black Mirror), Jurnee Smolett-Bell (Underground), and Janelle Monae (Moonlight) for Black Canary, Mary Elizabeth Winstead (10 Cloverfield Lane), Margaret Qualley (The Leftovers) and Cristin Milioti (Black Mirror) for Huntress, and Justina Machado (One Day at a Time) and Roberta Colindrez (Love Dick) for the part of Renee Montoya. Producers are also looking for a 12 year old Asian actress to play Cassandra Cain.

While the DC Extended Universe might have been a failure so far, Warner Bros is continuing to try new things so they can compete with Marvel. Upcoming films include Aquaman, Shazam, Suicide Squad 2, New Gods, Black Adam, and a standalone Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix that is currently filming.
