Olympic gold medalist Sanya Richards-Ross, known for leaving her opponents in the dust on the track, knows how to train for major competitions. But all of the practice and preparation in the world can’t make her 100 percent ready for her next big matchup: motherhood.
The retired sprinter and her former NFL star cornerback husband, Aaron Ross, welcomed their first child, a baby boy, this past Saturday. PEOPLE confirmed the news with the happy couple.
The child, who was born early Saturday morning at 7 lbs, 13 oz. and 21 inches long, is named after his father: Aaron Jermaine Ross II. Her due date was August 19, but the newborn came a few days earlier.
The couple had a baby shower in June in preparation for their son. The lovely event took place in Austin, Texas.
It’s unclear just yet how the delivery went, but back in May, Ross told PEOPLE that she was exercising pretty consistently in the hopes of having a smooth labor. She also noted that working out helped her have some energy and hold it together physically as she faced cravings throughout her pregnancy.
“It gives me energy and is the perfect balance to the additional eating and cravings,” she said. “Although I’m not training nearly as hard I feel that my body is very responsive to the workouts I do.”
Richards-Ross added, “I also hope that it will make my delivery as easy as my pregnancy has been!”
However her delivery went, it’s clear that the wait and the work to bring little Aaron Jr. into the world was more than worth it for the new mom:
