Newly Released Deleted Scene From Black Panther Features A Powerful Black Love Moment

Marvel
Personally, I could have watched an additional hour of Black Panther and remained completely enthralled. But I know how movie studios get down. They don’t want anything to prevent the audience from losing interest. So scenes end up on the cutting room floor.
Black Panther was no different. But now that the film is getting ready to be released on DVD, some of the scenes that didn’t make it to the movie are being released.
In one of them, there is an interesting interaction between W’Kabi, played by Daniel Kaluuya and Okoye played by Danai Gurira.
I think everyone and their mama has seen the movie by now, but if you haven’t spoiler alert.
After T’Challa has been defeated by Killmonger, the couple come back to the palace to discuss what has happened and why W’Kabi has so quickly given up his loyalty to T’Challa to fight alongside Killmonger.
As someone who watched the movie and wanted to know more about their relationship, it was interesting to see Kaluuya express the depth of his emotions about T’Challa not bringing Klaue back to Wakanda. And then soften when he began speaking about their children, the future of the country. I can see why this particular scene was cut but it also provides context to the battle scene when Wakandans were fighting each other, choosing to serve T’Challa or Killmonger. It proved that his vision for the country would come at too high of a price. And that kiss and embrace between the two of them at the end? I liiiive.
I can’t wait to see more.
Black Panther will be available on streaming sites on May 8 and released on DVD and Blu-Ray on May 15. There will be separate retailer exclusive versions. Best Buy will have Steenbok versions, Target has a filmmaker edition featuring commentary from director Ryan Coogler. Walmart will have the version that includes trading cards.
Visit the Black Panther website for a full list of all the editions.
