Every actress has her moment and Niecy Nash is currently having hers. Though she’s been in the biz for years and has done everything from host Clean House on the Style Network (for which she won an Emmy in 2010), stand out in the ensemble cast comedy series Reno 911 as Deputy Raineesha Williams, and play in more supporting roles than we can count, Nash is finally getting her time as a leading lady.
The TNT crime comedy-drama Claws, in which Nash plays lead character Desna Simms, has proven to be the role to completely escalate the 47-year-old actress’s star power. And, let Nash tell it, when you consider her background, this moment in her career is something like a fairytale.
“If you look at my track record, ‘She saw her mother get shot. She buried her only brother. She went through a horrible divorce. She lost her church.’ And to look at [my life], in many ways that does feel like a Cinderella story,” Nash told Essence magazine in her September cover story.
Nash’s climb wasn’t exactly a steady one, however. But rather than stay in the pigeon hole Hollywood wanted her in, Nash waited for her time and pounced on the opportunity to show the industry what she’s really made of.
“For a long time, the industry was polite, but they were like, ‘Dear, you have a lane. You do broad comedy. Stay over there,’” she told the mag. “I had to be a lady in waiting and bide my time until they started to recognize. My first time doing dramatic work garnered me back-to-back Emmy nominations…You’ve got to figure out how to get your do-over.”
Niecy Nash’s Essence cover hits newsstands Friday, September 18.
