While people were busy ripping apart Gigi Hadid on social media for her hosting duties at last night’s American Music Awards, Selena Gomez took the stage and delivered one of the most heartfelt, and perhaps one of the best ever, acceptance speeches at the AMAs.
The 24 year old returned to the spotlight last night for the first time since announcing that she was taking a career break back in August to focus on her mental health. Although Gomez hadn’t confirmed that she’d been seeking professional treatment, multiple sources had come forward to state that she had. And last night, she left no doubt in anyone’s mind when she left her heart on the stage in front of everyone while accepting the award for favorite female artist in the pop/rock category.
“I think it’s safe to say that most of you know a lot of my life, whether I like it or not,” Gomez began as tears started flowing down her face. “I had to stop, ’cause I had everything and I was absolutely broken inside. I kept it all together enough to where I would never let you down, but I kept it too much together to where I let myself down.”
Gomez talked directly to her fans, telling them“I don’t want to see your bodies on Instagram. I want to see what’s in here. I’m not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore.” she went on to thank them as well. “All I can say from the bottom of my heart is I am so grateful I have the opportunity to share what I love with people that I love, and I have to say thank you so much to my fans because you guys are so damn loyal and I don’t know what I did to deserve you.”
Before walking off the stage, Gomez offered some advice for her fans as well.“If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken … whether you respect me or not, one thing you should know about is I care about people.”
The celebrities and fans in attendance were affected by Gomez’ words, including Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande, and several more showed their support online afterwards.
It takes a lot of courage and strength to do what Gomez did, and unlike a lot of speeches you see when celebrities accept awards, this one seemed very genuine and from the heart.
