We had a feeling that Sloane Stephens was going to win it all at the U.S. Open (we did tell you that she slays off the court and on), so we were excited to see the 24-year-old take home the U.S. Open title over the weekend. She beat fellow American Madison Keys 6-3, 6-0 on Saturday and the cash prize for her win was more money than the tennis ace had seen at once: $3.7 million.
Stephens’s reaction to seeing the check perfectly captured the look any one of us would give after being handed more than a million dollars (hell, more than $100). It also was great to see an athlete who’s not used to the big, big checks be naturally taken aback and grateful for such earnings. In video, Stephens can be seen saying, “That’s a lot of money — oh my God!”

For the record, Market Watch said Stephens had taken home $310,456 so far this year and had done so after missing 11 months of tennis following a foot injury. And they reported that before the U.S. Open, she earned $4,519,709 competing in her pro career, which started in 2010.
When asked about her big win and whether or not it motivated her to try and keep winning, Stephens had a hilarious response.
“Of course, girl, did you see that check that that lady handed me?” she said before laughing. “Like, yaaaas! Man, if that doesn’t make you want to play tennis, I don’t know what will!”
Stephens was also asked if she felt bad about beating Keys, a friend, in the final.
“Bad for her? She was in the finals too, what do you mean?” Stephens said. “Did you see the check she’s about to get? I’m sure she’ll be just fine.”
Her friend and runner-up, took home a lowly $1.8 million.
Clearly we’re in the wrong field.
