Sydelle Noel Of Glow On Why Cherry And Keith Are Black Love Goals, On-Screen And Off

Netflix
Today is the day! Season 2 of Netflix’s Glow premieres, and we’ll get to see more depictions of sisterhood, kick-a– wrestling moves, and a lot of bright tights style inspiration. But one very underrated thing the series also showcases well is Black love.
Star Sydelle Noel, who plays Cherry “Junkchain” Bang, is appreciative of the relationship shown between her character and on-screen husband Keith Bang (played by Bashir Salahuddin). Despite the series having a team of white writers, those behind Glow see the importance in showing healthy and supportive relationships between Black men and women.
“Our show creators , Liz [Flahive] and Carly [Mensch], I was like, thank you so much for showing that side of a Black couple that you don’t hardly see on TV right now. You hardly see Black love at all,” she said. “So I went to them and I was like, ‘Thank you so much!’ And they told me straight up that that’s what they want. They want to show that. And I hope it continues because a lot of people come up to me and they always mention the relationship that Cherry and Keith have. It’s very loving and it’s very supporting. And you’ll still see that in Season 2. We didn’t go away from that at all.”
And whether it’s romantic relationships or friendships, she sees the value in showing a lot more positive depictions of Black people, in general, on-screen.
“I’m glad that we show that because right now we don’t get a lot of that. And even more than that, we need more Black love on television instead of the bickering and whatever the case may be,” Noel said. “We need loving couples being supportive of each other. And that’s one thing that you always see with these two. Keith is always by his lady’s side, no matter if she makes more money than him or if she’s the one that’s working. It doesn’t matter. He loves her unconditionally, and that’s the same way it goes with Cherry. She loves him unconditionally. I’m glad that they show that. And for how many other seasons we have, I want that dynamic. I really want to keep that Black love going.”
