Every year, after the television broadcast, I wonder how Black Girls Rock is going to top themselves next time. And while they’ve honored some of the most talented women in our community, there are always more women standing next to or coming behind who also deserve the recognition.

This year, in the 7th year since it first aired on BET, superstar Taraji P. Henson is hosting.

The show will tape on August 5 at the new Jersey Performing Arts Center and air on Sunday, August 20.

Founded by DJ and activist Beverly Bond, Black Girls Rock seeks to honor women who’ve made grown breaking achievements in art, business, entertainment and community service.

Here’s what Taraji said about hosting this year’s event.

“I’m honored to host the ‘BLACK GIRLS ROCK!™ Awards. I love the message and I love Beverly Bond and her vision. I was lucky to be honored in 2011. It is truly a highlight of my life. Now I’m back to be part of this amazing night to honor the strong and powerful Yara, Issa Rae, Roberta, Suzanne, Derrica and Natalie. Let’s make history together as we come together as women of brains, beauty and in support of each other.”

As Taraji mentioned, this year, honorees include Issa Rae, Yara Shahidi, Roberta Flack, Suzanne Shank, a Wall Street powerhouse and pioneer, and community organizers Derrica Wilson and Natalie Wilson from the Black Missing Foundation.
