Are you a nurse? If you’re “looking for a challenge”, pack your bags and head to Fair Isle, Scotland’s most remote, inhabited island.

The tiny island, in need of a nurse practitioner, has placed an advertisement on
NHS Scotland: “We are looking for an enthusiastic autonomous practitioner with a degree of flexibility to work on the non-doctor island of Fair Isle.”

But this Fair Isle position is certainly no easy undertaking.

Although there are plenty of animals on the island–10,000 puffins and a thousand sheep—there are only about 60 people.

Furthermore, the island is so isolated that the only way to get there is by an 8-seater plane or ferry — which is often postponed for weeks due to rough sea conditions. On top of that, the island has no power at night and no flights into the airport until the snow clears. And as there is no pub on the island and there is only one small shop, recreational activities consist of bird-watching and knitting.

A doctor visits the island once every three months. However, all other health care is left to the community nurse.
Because the job requires being on-call 24/7 in a remote location, the nurse receives a “distant island allowance” as well as a regular salary.

The current nurse, Elena Mera Long, has worked in Fair Isle for the last decade. According to resident and blog-writer Tommy H. Hyndman, Elena is not only the resident nurse, but an organ player for the church, Christmas choir director, piano teacher, and – as many Fair Isle residents are – a skilled knitter.

“People say: ‘What do you do all day on such a small island?’” Elena said. “They must be joking. Everybody on Fair Isle works like beavers, and there’s never a dull moment. It’s a model for a good community. I doubt if there’s a more harmonious one anywhere.”

Elena is leaving her job as nurse for a position in Romania. Applications for her former position close on April 24, so, nurses, if remote living, bird-watching and knitting is for you, get your resume ready.
