This Music Makes Dogs Happiest, According To Research
If you’re a dog person, there’s nothing you love more than seeing your pup wag his tail. Whether he’s running around the yard, playing with his favorite chew toy or munching down on a bone, seeing him happy makes you happy. After all, a dog is a man’s best friend. There’s no question about it that our furry four-legged friends bring happiness into our lives. According to a recent study, there’s another way you can make your dog happy. This simple trick can even make your pooch happier than a new toy.
Researchers at the University of Glasgow in Scotland conducted a study to find out what type of music dogs prefer. They found that reggae and soft rock topped the canine charts! They also found that certain dogs seem to have different tastes when it comes to music.
PhD student Amy Bowman was part of the study. “We were keen to explore the effect playing different genres of music had, and it was clear that the physiological and behavioral changes observed were maintained during the trial when the dogs were exposed to a variety of music,” she said.
The experiment took place at SPCA in Dumbarton, Scotland. Researchers studies how dogs responded to different styles of music. Professor Neil Evans explained, “Overall, the response to different genres was mixed highlighting the possibility that like humans, our canine friends have their own individual music preferences.” He added, “That being said, reggae music and soft rock showed the highest positive changes in behavior.”
In 2015, the Scottish SPCA released another study showing that classical music had a calming effect on dogs. Colorado State University researchers found the same conclusions during a 2012 study. This study also found that heavy metal music heightened anxiety and unrest in canines.
Songs For Your Furry Friend
Deezer, an online music streaming service, worked with animal behaviorist Dr. Sands to put together a canine-approved playlist. They identified songs that can brighten your dog’s mood and songs that can help relax your pet.
Songs To Make Your Dog Happy
- Skepta – Shutdown
- Daya – Sit Still, Look Pretty
- Avicii – Wake Me Up
- OutKast – Hey Ya!
- Bee Gees – Stayin’ Alive
- Salt-N-Peppa – Push It
Songs To Relax Your Pooch
- Adele- Someone Like You
- Justin Bieber – Love Yourself
- Bob Marley The Wailers – Could You Be Loved
- Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
- Pulp – Common People
- The Stranglers – Golden Brown
If seeing your pet happy makes you happy, these studies can help ensure that your furry friend’s tail is constantly wagging! If you prefer to listen to heavy metal music, you might want to stick to playing it in your car, or any other time that your pup isn’t around. If you sense that your dog is feeling anxious during a thunderstorm, try turning on some classical music to soothe your dog’s anxiety. And if you simply want to brighten your dog’s day and boost their mood, turn on some reggae or soft rock. You never know, your pooch might actually start to dance when they hear their favorite beat!
