TIFF Announces Their Gala And Special Presentations For 2017

The Toronto International Film Festival is already lining up to be strong for 2017. This morning at their live unveiling, they announced the first of the films to screen during their 42nd annual event, and it includes works from Darren Aronofsky, Guillermo del Toro, Angelina Jolie and George Clooney. While we have to wait just a little bit longer to find out which movie will be the focus of their opening night festivities, they ahve given us enough to get excited about the event. Here are some of the films we are looking forward to the most.

Battles of the Sexes: In 1973 a tennis match took place between the sexist, ex-tennis champ Bobby Riggs, and the number one ranked female tennis star Billie Jean King. It was the first such battle between the sexes, and was highly anticipated. This film tells the true story and stars Steve Carell and Emma Stone as the duo. The film makes its international debut at the festival.

Mother!: Just last week it was announced that Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, starring Jennifer Lawrence and Javier Bardem, was being bumped up a month, and we now know why. It’s making it’s North American premiere at TIFF, and the studio is probably hoping to cash in on the popularity of the film at the festival.

The Mountain Between Us:  Kate Winslet and Idris Elba star as two strangers who charter a plane and end up relying on each other to survive its crash, and the subsequent journey through an isolated mountain range. It will be the world premiere of the film at TIFF, so you can expect crowds at the screenings.

The Shape Of Water: Director Guillermo del Toro seems to be everywhere these days in Toronto, but then again maybe it has something to do with him moving here recently. Not only does he have an upcoming exhibit at the AGO starting in September, but he is also premiering his latest film The Shape of Water in Canada during TIFF. And he also filmed it here as well. It’s about a deaf woman who discovers a classified experiment and sets out to change how it will play out.

First They Killed My Father: Angelina Jolie directed this film, set to make it’s Canadian premiere at TIFF, about a Cambodian author and human rights activist who recounts the horrors she suffered under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge.

Suburbicon:  George Clooney returns to the directors chair for this film starring Matt Damon, Oscar Isaac and Julianne Moore. It will be the first time it’s seen in North America, and is about a home invasion that rattles a small town.

Stronger:  Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany star in this true story of one of the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing in 2013. The film is one of the Fall’s most anticipated, and it makes its World Premiere at TIFF 2017.
