If you’ve ever gone hard at the gym for a while, only to turn around and take a break from your routine, you probably know that trying to get back into the groove of things can be hard. Like, really hard. You come up with excuses, you get busy, and at the end of the day, you’re just not feeling putting the work in. It’s a struggle for everybody, including the stars.
Tracee Ellis Ross works out often with celebrity trainer Tracy Anderson, and her workouts are no joke. So when she fell off of her workout schedule and into a few too many bags of microwavable popcorn, it wasn’t easy getting back into the gym. She did it though, and her face during the whole ordeal was very relatable:
LOTS OF MICROWAVE POPCORN ? NOT ENOUGH WORKING OUT ~ but I’m back

Despite all of that, as she put it, “I’m back.”
But even if she does miss a few workouts, as she shared with PEOPLE, Ross eats pretty healthy in a day, avoiding dairy, drinking four liters of water daily and getting her produce from farmers markets.
“I like simple, whole foods,” she said. The 44-year-old’s snacks include a basic Pink Lady apple with peanut butter during the day, as well as olives, avocado toast and potato chips from the brand Boulder Canyon. As for breakfast, she told the publication she’s a fan of Special K with almond milk, a hard-boiled egg with quinoa, sauteed zucchini mixed with crushed Brazil nuts for lunch and broiled steak with a side of arugula with apples, onions, olive oil and lemon for dinner. All in all, the star sticks to around 1,880 calories a day and balances everything out with three to four workouts per week.
But the thing that brings her the most happiness in terms of her diet is treating herself to a meal at one of her favorite haunts.
“My favorite meal of the day is an early dinner/late lunch between 4 and 6 p.m.,” Ross said. “I love going to one of my favorite restaurants once a week to have a glass of wine and a delicious meal. I don’t restrict my eating to firm meal times. I eat in the same philosophy that I live with: joyfully!”
